Hunter: We’ve been talking about all the exciting Blue Zones-related material that’s coming to South Florida, but where is it going to be?

Stephen: Well, it’s actually in Miami World Center, the kind of the new heartbeat of downtown Miami where you see all that construction going up. Well, part of that construction is a site that’s being built right now, which will be a 54-story luxury hotel with a connected Blue Zone Center integrated within the hotel and connected through another medical office building.

Hunter: Right. And what’s the name of that hotel?

Stephen: The Legacy Hotel.

Hunter:  The Legacy Hotel! Well, that’s a perfect name for a place that’s hopefully giving people longer lives and healthier lives very true. To live their own legacy.

Stephen: Exactly.

Hunter: There you go. And what will we find inside of the Blue Zone Center? What sort of services will be available to people?

Stephen: Well, so the Blue Zone Center is really going to be a place where you could go and like we said in the last part, to understand your health, but it’s also a place where you can treat it. We have all types of different treatments, protocols and therapeutics found in that single location. But what’s nice is that this is a lifestyle hotel. It’s not a wellness hotel. It means you can go and have a lot of fun. You come down to Miami and you can come to us and we can help get you back on the right path. Or you may be visiting and staying in the hotel while you’re going through your wellness journey with us. And this is something that’s going to be reflected in the community. And one of the other things that’s a big part of the community is cardiovascular health. We talk about it all the time. People are afraid of heart attack, strokes and all sorts of other things.

Hunter: What are you doing to help spread the awareness in the community?

Stephen: In fact, we’re so passionate about heart disease and the impact it has on people. So we’re a sponsor of the American Heart Association and their upcoming event, Go Red for Women, to help bring the awareness of heart disease as it relates to women at an event on May 25. So something everybody should remember.

Hunter: Well, excellent. If we would like to learn more, how can we?

Stephen: Well, you could go to our website at www.bluezonescenter.com, you can learn a lot about what we’re doing, what we’re doing in the community, and of course, learn about the event, the Go Red for Women event that’s coming up, so you can be part of it.

Hunter: Well, Stephen, thank you so much for your time.

Stephen: Thanks, Hunter. Really appreciate it.

Hunter: Of course.

Hunter: Once again, I am joined by Stephen of Blue Zone Centers that are coming here to Miami. Stephen, it’s good to see you again.

Stephen: It’s great to see you. Thanks for having me again.

Hunter: Of course. Now this is so exciting because we love health and wellness, especially coming to Miami and having a new pillar in the community. But for people that weren’t with us last time, remind us, what is the Blue Zone Center?

Stephen: Well, the Blue Zone Center is going to be the very first blue Zone Center in the world, built on the philosophies of blue zones, areas in the world where people live the longest, happiest and healthy lives.

Hunter: So Stephen, what sort of things are going to be available at the Blue Zone Center?

Stephen: Well, the Blue Zone Center is going to be what we consider an ecosystem of preventative medicine, well-being services and partnerships. It’s connected to the Legacy Hotel, which we’re going to talk a little bit later about. And really what you’re going to find at the Blue Zone Center is a place where you can truly understand your own health, really understand how healthy each and every part of your body is including what you do in your lifestyle. And then from that, we actually curate a whole program that will focus on areas of your strengths and your weaknesses. And really it is a precision fitness plan. It’s precision nutrition plan, it’s precision sleep plan. It’s a whole team that surrounds you to help you live your life longer and better. It’s exciting that we’re going to go from a sick-care model to more of a healthcare model and actually look to prevent disease in the first place.

Hunter: You’re so right about that. And if you fix the core elements of someone’s lifestyle through a medical interface, through what we call lifestyle medicine, we can make dramatic changes to a person’s overall health and longevity. And it’s so exciting that there’s going to be a place where it’s all under one roof so you’re not running all over town and figuring out where it all is.

Well, in just a little while we’ll continue to talk about the Blue Zone Center and how exciting it is to be here in Miami. Plus we’ll also speak with Sid of Blue Zones and learn more about that as well. So stay with us.

Hello and welcome to Soflow Health. I’m Hunter Frankie, and today we’re at the Paramount Miami WorldCenter, and I want to talk to you about blue zones. First of all, what the heck are blue zones? The short version of what blue zones are is different parts of the world where people live extraordinarily long lives, and it’s largely due to their lifestyle. And today we’re going to meet some individuals that are turning Miami into a blue zone, creating blue zone centers right here. And I’ll share with you some of the power nine principles to live a long, healthy life, which go along with blue zones. The first blue zone power nine principle is to move naturally. So, if you want to live a long life, here’s some good news. You don’t have to grind yourself to death in the gym, run a marathon, or anything else like that. All you have to do is move naturally in your everyday life. So, if you like going for walks, gardening, or working on a farm, that’s moving naturally, just doing things that you need to do. But moving a lot, that means not staying sedentary. Now, whether you’re moving like Martin just was or going for a walk, you’re going to be in pretty good shape. Let’s learn more about what blue zones are, and the Blue Zone Center is coming here to Miami.

Hunter: What’s Stephen, what’s a blue zone?

Stephen: It was started by a grant from National Geographic and Dan Buettner, a researcher who went around the world to find out what communities around the world had a concentration of centurions people living over 100 years old.

Hunter: Right.

Stephen: And looked at their quality of life, their happiness, all the different markets that really, truly make for a blessed existence on this earth.

Hunter: Yes.

Stephen: And they found five blue zones. There’s one in Greece, there’s one in Italy, there’s one in Japan and Costa Rica, and actually one here in the United States. So what they did is they looked at all the qualities of those communities, vastly different communities, different cultures, different languages, different food, and they found believed on some really core fundamental similarities. And those similarities drive what they call blue zones called the Power Nine, which is a way of living to understand the components that are truly lifestyle changing, that can make you live a longer, happier, and healthier life.

Hunter: Right.

Stephen: So lifestyle is the number one thing you can do to improve your health. So, what the Blue Zone Center really is it’s a hospital that doesn’t treat sick patients, but only helps healthy patients stay healthier and live healthier, longer and better lives.

Hunter: Right.

Stephen: So, we do that through we have about 220,000 well-being programming. Part of that programming is an intense evaluation of who you are as an individual, your goals, your stage in life, your DNA background. And we create what we call a digital dashboard. But in addition, we have some of the best and the brightest practitioner partners. Tomorrow is the start of the Global Wellness Summit. So we’re here, and this is actually announcing Blue Zone Center to the world and telling them a little bit of our story of what we’re going to do. Susie is a tremendous asset. She helps us really understand what is going on in the world of wellness. Well being, health care, she’s kind of like a guiding light to whatever I do here is really based on what she puts out to the world and saying, this is really what’s happening. This is what’s needed.

Hunter: Well, Steve, thank you so much. We’ll continue our conversation in just a minute. I actually got a chance to sit down with Susie as well, so let’s take a listen in to how that went.

Susie: I’m chairman and CEO of the Global Wellness Summit and the Global Wellness Institute. So my whole life is all about health and wellness.

Hunter: Well, we love that here on SoFlo Health.

Susie: Yes.

Hunter: Tell us, what is the Institute about?

Susie: Well, the Institute has done the research on wellness for the last 16 years. So the wellness economy globally is a $4.4 trillion. Yes, it’s a huge number. And so we’ve been tracking the trends, and there’s such a trend for people getting involved in wellness. And then we have the Global Wellness Summit, which is a gathering happening tomorrow in Tel Aviv, where we’re kind of the Davos of wellness. C suite Executives from all over the world gather and we talk about and look at globally the whole wellness, healthcare, self care industry.

Hunter: If you’re just joining us today, we’ve been talking about the Power Nine principles of Blue Zones. And if you haven’t heard what a Blue Zone is just yet, it’s areas of the world where people live to be 100 years of age or older, more so than the average. We call those people centurions.

Welcome back to Soflow Health. I’m Hunter Frankie at the Paramount Miami World Center. And one of the reasons people live such a long time is their sense of purpose. Okinawa is a Blue Zone, and there they call it Ikigai. It’s their reason for getting up in the morning and living their life. It’s its purpose. And let’s talk about two more of the Power Nine principles according to Blue Zones, to live a healthier, longer life. The first one is to downshift or to destress. It’s not that people that live a long time or have long lives don’t have stressful lives. In fact, often it’s more stressful. But what they do is decompress. They find a way almost every day, or very often, to decompress, be grateful for what they have, and release that stress. Another principle is Hara Ha Chi Bu, and that means to eat only until you’re 80% full. In Okinawa, that’s what they say before they eat. As a reminder, hara ha chi boo. It means eat until you’re 80% full, which makes it so that you have less calories in you, which wil help you lose weight and maintain a healthy weight. Earlier, we met with Steve and Susie to learn about Miami becoming a healthier place. Let’s listen to Susie on what trends are on the health horizon. What sort of trends are you seeing in your research in health and wellness?

Hunter: What sort of trends are you seeing in your research in health and wellness? I mean, we see what I call know, one week it’s high-intensity interval training. The next week it’s, oh, it’s all about juices and the Juicing diets and smoothies. What sort of trends are you seeing now?

Susie: One trend, for example, is wellness real estate, where people want to live in places where their health and wellness is a priority. So that and of course, with Blue Zones and this particular center, that’s an example of it where you can live and you have all of that right there. So that’s a trend. And another trend we’re seeing is mental wellness because there’s a lot more talk, of course, about all the stress everyone has gone through. So people care more about their mental wellness. I’m really excited about what they’re doing here with the Blue Zone Center. I mean, this is a flagship that is going to be known around the world because what they’ve done or what they’re doing is they’re putting together the whole medical and wellness together in one place, plus the fact that Miami will be a Blue Zone footprint. Everyone will benefit from that.

Hunter: Well, Susie, thank you so much for your time and for the wonderful work you’re doing. We certainly appreciate it here on SoFlo Health.

Let’s turn our attention back to our conversation with Steve.

Hunter: How exciting is it that we had Susie with us?

Stephen: To get that kind of insight and knowledge right from the source is really amazing.

Hunter: So, Steve, what’s the vision for the Blue zone here in Miami?

Stephen: Well, the Blue Zone Center is connected to an incredible hotel called the Legacy Hotel. So what we’re also doing is we’re merging hospitality with healthcare. So we’re creating a whole environment that really changes everything about a healthcare experience. We have taken all those aggravating, annoying barriers of accessing your doctor on the phone or getting an appointment or rescheduling an appointment that isn’t six months out. We’re really looking at everything and changing it all from the ground up.

Hunter: Well, that’s extremely exciting for everyone here in Miami that has a health focus, which is a lot of people here, fortunately. If people want to learn more, how can they?

Stephen: Well, if you want to learn more about the Blue Zone Center, you can go to www.bluezonescenter.com and there you can learn all about the facility, its services, what we expect to do and stay on top of when it’s going to open.

Hunter: Excellent. Well, we’re excited for it. Steve, thank you so much for your time. I appreciate it.

Stephen: Pleasure.

The American Heart Association and this local artist team up to educate us about strokes when Soflow Health returns. I have two ways that you can live a longer, healthier, happier life according to Blue Zone’s Power Nine principles. One you might like. The other one maybe not so much. Let’s start with that one. But first, welcome back to SoFlo Health. I’m Hunter Frankie. We’re at the Paramount Miami World Center. All right, here we go. First one is to be more plant-focused. So have a plant-based diet. That doesn’t mean you can’t eat meat, cheese, or other things that you like. Just means to mostly have plants, beans, oats, whole foods, and things like that. This one you might like. And that’s to have wine at. Five. People that live those long, happy, healthy lives also drink fairly regularly, but moderately. They usually have about one to two drinks a day, but you can’t just save them all up for Saturday and have 14 drinks on Saturday and still expect to be healthy. Just doesn’t work like that.

Hunter: Today we’ve been talking about the Blue Zone Center coming to Miami, and now we’re going to talk about Blue Zones with Sid from Blue Zones.Sid, thanks for being with us.

Sid: Thanks for the invite, Hunter. It’s good to be here. Of course.

Hunter: And tell me, what are Blue Zones for people that don’t know?

Sid: We travelled the world with National Geographic to figure out why certain environments produced a greater number of Centenarians, and we’re trying to bring that to more and more communities here in North America.

Hunter: Right. And for those of you that didn’t catch that centurion is somebody that’s lived a hundred years.

Sid: Absolutely, Absolutely.

Hunter: Yes. And what are some of the things that people can do to create a Blue Zone here in Miami?

Sid: So we’re working here in South Florida and all of Miami Dade to create those environments. Our goal here, Hunter, is really to make the healthy choice, the easiest choice, to empower everyone to live a better life.

Hunter: So it’s safe to say that Blue Zones are when you hear about a healthy lifestyle, that’s what this is.

Sid: It is definitely a lifestyle, and we want to make it easy so that you don’t have to think about it.

Hunter: So, Sid, how does the Blue Zones Center tie in with Blue Zones?

Sid: We are currently working in 71 cities in North America. We help them with issues that they might have with child obesity or with cardiovascular disease, and walkability. Everybody knows they need to walk, but if there are no sidewalks and it’s not safe to walk from one neighbourhood to another neighbourhood, we need some policy changes and we need to have a built environment that supports the Blue Zone philosophy.

Hunter: Great. If people want to learn more about Blue Zones, how can they?

Sid: Bluezones.com. and You can learn all the principles, the power of nine, and lots of things that you can get off the website to take advantage of this as we roll this out in Miami Dade.

Hunter: Well, Sid, thank you so much for your time.

Sid: Absolutely, Hunter.I appreciate the offer.

Hunter: Of course. And we love that health and wellness is getting easier thanks to people like Blue Zones. We’re going to check back in with Stephen later, but first, watch this.

Today, I’m really pleased and honoured to announce that we/ I have been selected to chair and host a new initiative with Global Wellness Summit on bridging, medicine and healthcare. Something that’s not really been easily connected. In the past medicine and well-being have been two distinct areas that have never really combined into one holistic treatment plan for medical patients. Quite honestly after Covid- everything changed. People realized that 80% of all diseases are really lifestyle-related. We’re bringing some of the best minds in the industry together to provide primary research documentation, and information out to the public in the community in the industry about the importance of lifestyle, medicine and wellness working hand-in-hand.

As Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones plays on Netflix, Miami’s Blue Zones Center partners with Overtown Youth Center to invest in local youth.

The much-anticipated four-part docuseries Live To 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones premiered last week on Netflix. The series promises viewers a journey with author Dan Buettner to explore five unique communities where longevity is the norm and vibrancy is the lifestyle.

Longevity.Technology: In the early 2000s, Dan Buettner collaborated with National Geographic to reverse-engineer a formula for longevity. He scoured the globe for places where people have extraordinary longevity, living much longer than average. The places identified in his search are termed Blue Zones and comprise Okinawa in Japan, Sardinia in Italy, Ikaria in Greece, Nicoya in Costa Rica and Loma Linda in California. As well as having the highest rates of living centenarians, these five spots share some similar elements – a plant-based diet, natural movement and putting family first – that have been proven to promote longevity and health in their residents.

Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones takes a journey around the world to investigate the diet and lifestyles of those living the longest lives, and Buettner offers insight on how to benefit from following at least some of Blue Zone inhabitants’ practices.

The Blue Zones Center in Miami has granted Overtown Youth Center a Netflix subscription to access Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones. The Center hopes that those at the youth centre will enjoy the series, as well accessing other educational collections on Netflix. The Center describes its goal as “twofold: to present an educational journey and to inspire.”

Stephen Watson, Founder & Managing Partner Legacy Medical Holdings Member for the Board, Blue Zones Center, Miami said: “Our mission is rooted in a dedication to our community, in illuminating the minds of our young generation with global perspectives that can shape their futures in the most positive ways.

“We have always prioritized seeking avenues to elevate and offer enriching experiences for the exceptional youth at The Overtown Youth Center … We wish for the youth to glean insights and takeaways from the two decades of research into Blue Zones’ lifestyle and nutrition. Our commitment to OYC is unwavering as we continuously seek ways to broaden horizons and pave pathways for growth [1].”

Watson cited the leadership of Overtown Youth Center’s CEO Tina Brown and her team’s dedication as being key in shaping the futures of many young individuals, adding that the Center has profound appreciation for the transformative work Brown and her team are achieving at OYC.

Tina Brown commented: “This gesture is more than just access to a series; it’s an opportunity for our youth to understand the world better, its cultures, and the secrets to a good life. We’re grateful for this partnership and the shared vision to shape a brighter future [1].”

In a gesture of celebration, Dan Kodsi, CEO of Royal Palm Companies, illuminated the Paramount Residences in Miami blue, with the words Blue Zones, Live To 100, in order to pay tribute to the groundbreaking work of National Geographic, the entire Blue Zones team and Miami’s own Dan Buettner.

“Miami is truly in for a treat! I urge everyone not to miss Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones premiering this week on Netflix. Let us celebrate the wonder of life and the mysteries of longevity together,” Watson said [1].

The Blue Zones Centre services will include diagnostic, surgical, medical, spa, fitness, lifestyle medicine and wellbeing improvement programming.

The first Blue Zones Center is set to launch in Miami, Florida, and showcase the next generation of longevity medicine.

The facility is underpinned by Blue Zones’ research which has identified evidence-based ways to help people live longer and stay well. The company’s work is rooted in explorations and research done by National Geographic fellow Dan Buettner, who identified the ‘blue zones regions’ around the world where people live extraordinarily long and happy lives.

The upcoming 13-storey Miami facility will combine medical care, predictive diagnostics and preventive medicine to optimise disease management outcomes and inspire advanced patient wellbeing and longevity.

Home to a high-tech surgical centre and a diagnostic testing centre, the 220,000sq ft facility will be located in the upcoming Legacy Hotel & Residences* – a 50-storey mixed-use tower set to combine lifestyle, hospitality and longevity.

The facility will be home to a Blue Zones Health Zone which will provide a healthcare model that isn’t dependent on illness but derives the bulk of its patient acquisition through improving wellbeing

The Health Zone will be comprised of nine wellbeing centres under one roof:

  • The Movement Center for Orthopedic Sports Medicine.
  • The Nof1 Center of Lifestyle Medicine and Health Benchmarking.
  • The Center for Early Diagnosis, Precision and Longevity Medicine.
  • The Center for Visible Health and Vitality.
  • The Center for Performance and Functional Fitness.
  • The Downshift Center for Behavioral Health and Mindfulness.
  • The Center for Specialized Medicine.
  • The Center for Eyes, Ears, Nose and Throat.
  • The Center for Longevity Research.

Stephen Watson, Founder & Managing Partner Legacy Medical Holdings Member for the Board, Blue Zones Center, is spearheading the project and commented on the concept.

He said: “This location will combine world leaders in longevity and lifestyle medicine with the latest innovations in predictive, preventive, longevity medicine. It will be a place where personalised care, preventive medicine and rejuvenation treatments all co-exist at once.”

The upcoming facility is the product of a joint venture deal called Blue Legacy Ventures signed between Legacy and faith-based nonprofit integrated health system Adventist Health.

The location marks Adventist Health’s and its subsidiary Blue Zones’ first flagship centre for wellbeing.

The process

The facility will tap regenerative medicine treatments to reverse the negative effects of ageing. These rituals will be paired with the Blue Zones’ Lifestyle Foundational Medicine and therapeutic treatments to improve patients’ life and longevity.

At the beginning of each guest’s journey, the facility will compile comprehensive data to generate a baseline health report card for each user. This will include health insights where the Health Zone team can recommend follow-up care, lifestyle medicine recommendations, products and services.

Weaving wellness into hospitality

Legacy – the building which will house the Blue Zone Centre – forms part of the wider Miami Worldcenter megaproject, developed by the Royal Palm Companies.

Legacy will feature 219 hotel rooms and 310 residences all with Blue Zones’ Health Zone principles integrated into their design. As part of this, guests will be able to stay in exclusive Well-Being Rooms and Blue Zone Rooms designed for better patient care and outcomes.

The property will be complete with a high-end spa, an infinity-edge pool cantilevered 500ft above ground, Sleep Restore Rooms and Post-Surgical Rooms created to help optimise mental and physical wellness.

A global trend

Susie Ellis, industry figure and chair and CEO of the Global Wellness Summit and the Global Wellness Institute, contends that the Blue Zones lifestyle is part of a larger global trend that is seeing more people prioritising health and wellness when choosing where to live.

“The Miami Blue Zones Center will be an international flagship for how medicine and wellness can be brought together in one place.

“Since Covid-19, we’ve witnessed a huge trend in terms of the medical and wellness communities working together to solve health issues, focusing on prevention over disease treatment. This is the beauty of the Blue Zones’ philosophy and lifestyle – it’s all about prevention, longevity and quality of life.

“I think the Blue Zones Center in Miami will be a beacon for more Blue Zones Centers around the world, encouraging more people to live in places that prioritise health and wellness.”

Enriching the local community

Sidney Stolz, chief design and experience officer for Blue Zones said: “Before The Health Zone at the Blue Zones Center opens, you’ll see us on the ground in communities, making a positive impact through Blue Zones activation.

“Blue Zones Project is where we are transforming communities by optimising environments that lead to longer, healthier, better lives everywhere, including the new Blue Zones Center in downtown Miami.”
